Brush Mileage: Quick Studies for Stronger Painting
$125
Sunday 6/29
10am-3PM
In this workshop, learn a systematic approach to painting that will allow you to practice with intention.
Quick studies are an incredible way to get “brush mileage.” With each painting being limited to 20 or 40 minutes, you will be forced to work efficiently and deliberately. There’s no time to fuss around or make something perfect; you just need to get it down and move on.
The system is simple and can be broken down as follows…
2-5 minutes: sketch the composition
5-10 minutes: paint your big value shapes
10-20 minutes: refine the painting
Working from life with a model, we will focus our attention on portraiture. By the end of the workshop you’ll walk away with a clearer understanding of how to mix colors efficiently, bravely apply paint, and recognizing that at the end of the day, not every painting is precious, freeing you up to take bold risks.
Supplies
6-10 canvas boards, or surface of your choosing
oil or acrylic paints: titanium white, cadmium yellow (or Hansa yellow), yellow ochre, cadmium red (or Napthol red), alizarin crimson (or quinacridone red), ultramarine blue, burnt sienna, burnt umber
Note: bring any colors you already have or wish to experiment withOdorless mineral spirits for oil paint; matte medium or other paint medium of choice for acrylics
Assortment of brushes, from small to large (aim to have more medium-sized brushes sized 4, 6, 8 and up) - flats and filberts preferred
cups or jars for water/spirits
