The hands are a marvel of functionality, dynamism and aesthetics: the complexity of their forms, their inherent mutability, and gestural elegance make the hands a challenging, but extremely rewarding subject.

In this two day workshop, we will practice capturing this elusive subject with the conceptualization of their forms, copying the hands from life with the help of a model and using a variety of drawing techniques and media.

Each day will start with a 30 minute demonstration during which you can take notes and draw along with me. The rest of the day will be devoted to copy the hands from life in different poses and from different angles, using graphite on paper, charcoal and chalk on toned paper or red pastel on toned paper. The participant artists are also invited to use any technique of their choice.

Materials

The participants can use any material and drawing techniques they prefer, this is a list of materials that will permit you to practice a variety of drawing techniques:

  • A drawing pad of good quality paper such as Strathmore Drawing series 400, medium surface about 14” by 17” or any other type of drawing paper of decent quality; a couple of sheet of tan or gray toned paper.

  • Graphite pencils in HB-B-2B gradations, and/or colored pencils in black, white and red earth, (such as burnt Sienna or Indian red), and/or red, black and white pastels or crayons.

  • Compressed charcoal pencils in hard, medium and soft or B, 2B and 4B. Wolff’s carbon is a particularly good brand, but General’s is also sufficiently good and cheaper. White chalk or pastel in pencils or sticks.

  • Red earth pastel in pencils or sticks, such as sanguine, India red, burnt sienna. These are some brands: Cretacolor pastels, Conte crayons, Pitt pastel, Stabilo pastels.

  • Kneaded eraser and/or Mars plastic eraser; sharpeners and sandpaper.

  • A small sketchbook for taking notes during the morning demonstrations can be useful.
